Shriners International

Shriners International, also commonly known as The Shriners or formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, is an order established in 1870, based on Masonic principles. Men must be Master Masons, and female candidates must be closely related to a Mason

Shriners International describes itself as “a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth”. There are approximately 350,000 members in the U.S.A. and several other countries. It is very well known because of the Shriners Hospitals for Children,

The origin of the movement was less than serious. It grew out of a Masonic lunchtime discussion in New York in 1870, where the idea of a new fraternity for Freemasons, stressing fun and fellowship, was brought up. Two of the participants decided it was a good idea, and decided to act upon it.
