Shriners Hospitals For Children

The main charity of the Shriners is a network of Hospitals for Children in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

In 1920, the Imperial Council of the Shriners decided to set up a "Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children", to treat orthopaedic and spinal cord injuries and other birth defects in children. It was too difficult to choose one site, so they decided to build a network of hospitals across North America. The first hospital opened in 1922 in Louisiana. There are now twenty-two healthcare facilities, entirely funded by the organisation itself.
